Chile: SQM GE box cab locos and the Pacific

As some of you were interested in my Chile photos I like to show you one more picture from the SQM in Tocopilla. The line climbs from the transloading facility at the port with 4% steadily up to Barrilles. The linie is so steep that they had to built a switchback at the front slope of the mountains. After the train curves around this mountain there is a phantastic view down to Tocopilla and the Pacific. In this photo we see box cabs 607+604 working uphill.
Below you'll see old private small "family mines" simply built into the mountains. There are basically no roads to get there.
For this photo I hiked along the tracks for some time and took this photo already from the next mountain range standing on the tracks were the train will pass by in about 30 minutes. The train already needed about one hour to get from Tocopilla to this spot. Almost like PKP Cargo... ;-)

Just a quick information: this line is closed now! There had been some wash outs along the steep grade which were not repaired anymore. Instead the nitrate is trucked now from the mine directly to the docks in Tocopilla for export. The GE box cab locos are all scrap! Too bad. |
